Handicrafts Fair At Delhi Haat

The Handicrafts Fair is held in Delhi Haat, better known as Dilli Haat, which is located at Aurobindo Marg, opposite INA market, in South Delhi. The Fair is organized with the joint efforts of Delhi Transport and Tourism Development Corporation (DTTDC), New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), along with support from Ministry of Textiles.

Time of Fair

The Handicrafts Fair is usually held in February every year.

Significance

The idea of Dilli Haat was conceived in 1990 by DTTDC. The place, which is on 6 acres of land, is devoted to Crafts Bazaar. The venue renders an aura of a traditional village fair where visitors can roam around, eat, shop, indulge in various activities like sketch making, folk dances, competitions, and more, and, in short, have a merry time.

Dilli Haat offers a fine platform for artisans from across the country to set up their stalls to exhibit their handicraft items and trade in them.

Facts

The Handicrafts Fair at Dilli Haat features around 62 stalls that sell handicrafts of various types from across India. The stalls are allotted for 15 days to artisans on a rotation basis. This gives opportunity to a wide range of craftspeople from almost every nook and corner of the country to showcase their craft work.

The Fair is an amalgamation of crafts, cultural activities, and food. Visitors can find an interesting range of items like Kantha saris, intrinsic handicraft jewelry, delicate carvings from sandalwood and rosewood, ornaments made from beads, gems, coconut shells, and others, handloom fabrics, products of silk, Khadi items, jute products, footwear made from camel hide and more, and other fascinating items.

The Fair also features live demonstrations by artisans and potters.

The International Food Plaza inside Dilli Haat presents cuisines from various states of India. About 25 stalls serve delicious recipes. They are lent to the specific caterer for two years on the condition that they will serve special dish of their particular state.

How to Reach

Dilli Haat is easily accessible through cab, local buses, autorickshaws, and metro train. The nearest metro station is INA metro station. The place is located near the famous markets of South Extension, Hauz Khas Village, and renowned hospitals like AIIMS and Safdarjung.
