Lifestyle of Delhi People

Delhi’s lifestyle has been evolving at a fast pace over the last few years as people from different cultures and communities have settled down here in great numbers. The diversity of people has started to reflect in the lifestyle as well. Today, this diversity has precisely become the face of Delhi. Surrounded by states like Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on all sides, Delhi is an excellent combination of traditional and modern celebrations under the same roof. All festivals are celebrated with the same vigour and fun – be it Diwali or Christmas, Holi, Buddha Purnima, Id etc. During these celebrations, people of all castes and creed get together and share a unique harmony among themselves - this is indeed a treat to watch for guests coming here. Delhi is the perfect example of the phrase that best describes India - Unity in Diversity.

Delhi was the hub of the Mughal dynasty when they ruled over India. Hence, even today, we can see many glimpses of the royal history and tradition that Delhi enjoyed during those days. Almost every part of Delhi has some monument or the other built in authentic Mughal style of architecture. What surprises tourists is that, these old monuments and dilapidated ancient buildings are present in the same vicinity where there are modern shopping malls and party clubs. There has also been a phenomenal increase in the number of people inhabiting Delhi. Currently, this figure stands at more than 14 million – a baffling figure indeed! This has led to quite a few problems in Delhi like water and power shortage, traffic jams and other problems with public amenities. In order to ease off the burden on Delhi, surrounding areas like NCR (National Capital Region) were developed and cities like Gurgaon, Noida and Faridabad started to come up in a big way with large number of residential and commercial establishments.

Shopping and Mall Culture of Delhiites

Gone are the days when citizens used to go to different shops for their different needs. Nowadays, people in Delhi prefer going to huge shopping malls, as they can shop for all that they want from one single place.

Nightlife of Delhiites

This is one of the newest trends in Delhi and many youngsters are seen in the nightclubs in the city even during wee hours of the night. They have fun, enjoy a drink with their friends, dance away to glory and have a whale of a time at these clubs. Some famous night spots in Delhi are Le Meridian, Hyatt Regency, Park Hotel, Maurya Sheraton and the Taj Palace hotels. The clubs in each of these are known as CJ, Oasis, Someplace Else, Ghunghroos and My Kind of Place respectively.

Cuisine of Delhiites

There is no particular cuisine which forms the identity of Delhi. Since people of many states are settled here, all kinds of cuisine are available at Delhi hotels to cater to their diverse needs and preferences. All hotels serve almost all kinds of cuisine as chefs here belong to different parts of the country and the world. You can taste various styles like Tandoori, Kebabs, Biryani, South Indian, Continental, Chinese, Punjabi and various others in Delhi hotels.

Restaurants and Hotels Culture of Delhiites

Apart from joints selling local delicacies, there are many franchises of international giants like Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, Nirula’s etc. available here in large numbers as there many takers for these kinds of foods. In addition to dine-in options, there are hundreds of places where you can order and take away your food. Almost all the restaurants sell tasty food and you have the option of picking your restaurant based on your budget constraints.

The way one dresses forms an important part of one’s culture. In Delhi, there is a marked change in the way youngsters dress. This is evident when you visit any college campus. Boys and girls follow Western style of dressing to a great extent these days; however, they do value Indian and ethnic style of dressing up during important functions and festivals.

Transportation of Delhiites

The transport system in Delhi is one of the best in the country and at par with some of the high-class international networks. The best example of this is the Delhi Metro. The very fact that it caters to the needs of millions of people commuting daily to and from work is proof enough to explain the efficiency of the Delhi Metro system. The Road Transport Corporation of Mumbai has also introduced many air-conditioned buses so that people find it easy to transport during peak hours. These buses also proved to be in good stead during the Commonwealth Games for which Delhi played host.

Delhi Metro is indeed more expensive than all other modes of public transport. However it is worth every penny, because metro trains are swanky, very comfortable, on time and connect a wide network of places. Currently almost all parts of North Delhi, Central Delhi, East Delhi and West Delhi are covered by the Metro trains. There are plans going on to include areas of South Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon as well under the purview of the Delhi Metro.
