Assam - Gateway to Seven Sister States

Assam is an Indian state found in the region of north-eastern parts of the country. The capital of Assam is Dispur which has its location in the municipal area of city of Guwahati. Situated in the southern direction of the eastern Himalayas, the state consists of Barak and Brahmaputra River valleys besides the North Kachar hills and Karbi Anglong encompassing the area of 30,285 square miles or 78,438 km². The state of Assam has in its surroundings, six of the Seven Sister States such as Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Tripura. Assam along with these states remain connected to the remaining parts of the country geographically through a narrow strip of land found in West Bengal and is referred as “Chicken's Neck” or Siliguri corridor.

Internationally, Assam has border sharing with Bangladesh and Bhutan and people, climate and cultures are similar to that of South-East Asia, major parts in East Policy of India’s look. Assam had become a part of the British conquest after they occupied the region in 1824-1826 in the foremost Anglo-Burmese War.

Assam has been enriched with rich culture, languages, ethnic groups, dialects spoken as well as literature.
