Gorakhnath Temple

History

The name of the temple is derived from the famous saint, Gorakhnath. He was of the medieval era and preached the ‘Nath Sampradaya’. This temple was built in his honor at the given location. It was said that at this place, he practiced his austerities. The Gorakhpur region includes the districts of Kushinagar, Basti, Deoria, Azamgarh and parts of Nepal tarai. All of these areas that may be called the Gorakhpur janapad, were a crucial centre of the Hindu Vedic culture. Gorakhpur was a part of the well-known kingdom of Koshal; the one of the 16 mahajanapadas from the 6th century BC. The priorly known monarch ruling this region with his capital at Ayodhya was Ikshavaku. He founded the solar dynasty of kshatriyas that produced a number of illustrious kings until the accession of Ram, who was the strongest ruler of this dynasty. Then onwards, Gorakhpur remained an integral part of the erstwhile empires of Maurya, Shunga, Kushana, Gupta and Harsha dynasties.

How to Reach

By Air

Reaching Gorakhpur is easy via air. The Air Force Station is a commercial airport that is 8 km away from the railway station. Travelers may also avail another airstrip of U.P. Civil Aviation, available at Kasia 55 km away from the city of Gorakhpur in Kushinagar district. Rest of the commercial airports in the vicinity of this place is situated at Varanasi and Lucknow.

By Rail

By Road

The main bus stand of this place is near to the railway station. Buses from Gorakhpur to Sanauli ply from the early hours in the morning (3.00 A.M) till late at night. From here, visitors would also get regular buses for other routes like Lucknow, Varanasi, Delhi, Kanpur, etc.

By Self-Transport

Tourism

Present day Gorakhnath Math is centred at Gorakhpur in the east of Uttar Pradesh and is also named after a saint. It is a religious institution, which runs two Gorakhnath temples; the one in Nepal in the Gorkha district (other word is believed to be derived from the Baba Gorakhnath), and the other one in little south of Gorakhpur. Gorakhnath’s gaddi (prayer seat) and samadhi shrine (tomb) is said to be contained in this temple. All of these temples hold a lot of importance being the centre of most of the Hindu religious activities performed in this region. Numerous devotees come in here on the Makar Sankranti occasion, when they offer khichadi to the Gorakhnath Baba. The Nepal King also seldom visits one of these temples during festivals. It is largely believed that people enchanting Shri Gorakhnath Chalisa 12 times are the ones who are blessed with a miracle jyoti (auspicious flame).
