State Museum Lucknow


Lucknow is the capital city of Uttar Pradesh and is the centre of activities in Uttar Pradesh. The city is situated on the banks of river Gomti and is surrounded by many monumental buildings built by the Nawabs, beautiful gardens and European structures. Lucknow is also the city of many magnificent museums which are the replica of the wealthy history of ancient era. All the museums in Lucknow have a rich collection of peculiar items which reproduce the rich culture and tradition of the bygone era. Some of the well known museums are the Lucknow State Museum and 1857 Memorial Museum. The museum authorities have preserved the ruins in the same condition in which they came under the protection of centre in the year 1920.

Collection

The Lucknow museum is inspiring with its etchings, woodworks, coins, housing sculptures, paintings, decorative arts, bronze statues from the early era. The Lucknow museum takes one through a trip of the prehistoric period. The artefacts present in the museum are unique and gives a great insight into history.  The museum consists of the model of the Residency, lithographs, old photographs, documents, paintings, period entities like the swords, guns, shields, cannons, rank badges, 17th century wine jar  and many other items of interest. An Egyptian mummy is another highlight here. There are some beautiful diorama and paintings on canvas which visualise the battle at the Residency and many other interesting things related to the theme.  The visitors will be able to see the story of 1857 unwind in the chronological order.

Galleries

The ruins of Residency bring back memories of the great uprising of 1857 in Lucknow. The museum is designed in such a way that the visitors can get the visual accounts of the freedom struggle of 1857. This must see museum, is divided into ground floor and basement parts. The ground floor entrance is through a large double columned portico at the southern direction. A new gallery has been added to the basement of the museum where the work of art recovered during excavation of the south portion of Residency complex is exhibited.

Visitor Information

The State Museum Lucknow is open all days except Mondays from 10.30 AM to 4.30 PM. It is closed on holidays as well. It will take about 2 to 3 hours to go around the museum. The entry fee is quite nominal. Luggage room facility is available here facilitating a relaxed visit to the museum.

How To Reach

Since Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh and strategically placed it is well connected by road, rail and air.

By Road

The national highways passing through Lucknow are NH 56, NH25 and NH28. It is easily accessible from most of the important cities of India.

By Train

The main railway junction is situated at the heart of Lucknow and then there is a smaller station at Charbagh. Many express trains and super fast trains pass through Lucknow.

By Air

The airport is situated at Amausi which is 14 kms away from the heart of the city. Most flights operate to nearby cities like Ranchi, Delhi, Patna and others. There are occasional flights to Mumbai as well.
