Maharaja Banaras Vidya Mandir Trust Museum is located at Ramnagar Fort in Varanasi. It was in 1964 that the museum was established.The Museum was the home of Maharaja Benaras in the late point.The museum has various valuable items which are important to look and prepare one. A few points in the museum are weapons, palanquins, manuscripts, paintings, astronomical clocks and great deal more. The depiction of Dussehra, Ram leela and textile woven along with ivory are important aspects to be mentioned.

Collection

The museum holds a number of collections which go to the prior period of the Rajas of Benaras.The museum is divided into 5 sections.The museum displays manuscripts, weapons, palanquins, decorative arts, paintings, textiles, astronomical clocks and great deal more. Outstanding objects of the famed place are pictorial representations of Dussehra, textile woven with ivory and a colorful procession of boats.

Medieval period artifacts are a percentage of the collections.The assemblage of items purely belongs to the royal family of Banaras. Aside from these, there are many handcrafted items as well. A few famed items in the museum include decorated art pieces, elephant saddles, various fabrics, ornate palanquins, ancient manuscripts, furniture, gold plated howdahs, and more artifacts. The museum also holds royal collection of palkies, armors, vintage cars, arms, old guns and antique clocks which were utilized in the royal period.

From the various items, the museum is segmented into 5 parts.The first part opens up varied kinds of vehicles, brocade palanquins, carriers, and howdahs which are designed with silver, which is signified to be run along the shoulder of men or elephants back during important occasions like festivals, wedding or hunting etc.

When we take a look the 2nd section it holds a great assortment of attires and a number of private instruments and other items like pipes, musical instruments, chairs, carpets, beds and other particulars which were each day used for decorating Maharaja and his kin.

The 3rd part of the museum is a bit interesting as it takes for the various armories which were employed. The evolution of swords, guns and arms which were used in Ramnagar are displayed here. The various weapons from bow to rifles are displayed here. The departments also contain some important ivory sculpture and a few hunting trophies of the Maharaja.

The 4th part of the museum displays furniture, royal bed, costumes and other royal trappings of the Maharaja.Presents which Maharaja received from foreign dignitaries and other significant gifts received from people who saw the fortress are also exhibited in this part.

The 5th section opens up a glimpse of Ramalila which is a theatrical sort of Lord Rama story at Ramnagar.The section also displays icons, masks, and related items used; it also exposes some of the oldest manuscripts of Ramacharitamanasa of Tulasi.

Visitor Information

The timings for the museum are mentioned, which would prove to be a useful visitor data. From January to March the museum works from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm and 2.00 pm to 5.30 pm. From April to September it is 8.30 am to 12.30 pm and from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm. From October to December it would work from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm and 2.00 pm to 5.30 pm. Muharram and Vijaya Dashami are declared as holiday.

How to Reach

By Road

The fort is 14km from Varanasi and can be reached by taxi or auto. In other means the Uttar Pradesh state buses and private buses are available to reach the fort. The buses ply frequently making easy for people to travel. The NH 2 connects Ramnagar fort from nearby places.

By Train

The Ramnagar railway station is the nearest one which connects almost all major cities to reach the place.

By Air

The closest airport to Ramnagar fort is the Lal Bahadur Shastri international airport which links all the major cities of the country.
