Bundelkhand Chhatrasal Museum, Banda is a museum which was established in the year 1955.   Museum is a multi-purpose museum with a huge collection of ancient monuments. The museum hosts many visitors from different parts of the country and world. Maharaja Chhatrasal was a great Bundela warrior and he revolted against the Mughal rule spear-headed by Aurangazeb. He managed to create a kingdom of his own. He was greatly inspired by Chatrapathi Shivaji. Chhatrasal started his campaign at a very young age and annexed many places.  More than five generals of Aurangazeb were defeated by this young warrior. He did meet defeat a few times. But he was mostly on a victory ride. Later Aurangazeb turned his attention to Deccan which made things easier for Chhatrasal. Till his last breath he was defeated or ruled over by the Mughals. He bequeathed his land to Baji Rao before his death. For this he became a hero and his name and fame spread far and wide. There is a stadium named after him in Delhi.  It is the palace of this great warrior in Banda that is preserved as a museum now. Banda is the easternmost district of Bundelkhand and is a place filled with forts and temples apart from the Bundelkhand Chhatrasal Museum.

Collection

This museum displays many types of anthropological and archaeological collections like sculptures, stone implement, beads and seals, terracotta collections, coins and it has a natural science section too.  Fresco paintings, cenotaph of a queen, weapons all bring alive the life of a bygone era.

There are no galleries in that sense of the word in this museum. They are  forts, palaces and monuments that speak to you about the great conquests of this king.

Visitor Information

The museum is open on all days except on Wednesdays and public holidays. The timings keep changing according to the season. In summer the museum is open between 7.30am and 11am and 3pm and 5.30pm and during winter between 3am to 11am and 2.30pm and 5pm.

There are many places available for sightseeing in and around Banda. Kalinjar (Kalanjar) is a famous historical fort in Banda district and is one of the best heritage sites. This is one of the eight forts built by Chandela kings during the 1st and 2nd century. This fort is situated on the Vindya mountain range and is 56km away from Banda. The ruins of Bhuragarh fort is another fort worth seeing near Banda.

How To Reach

Banda is well connected by road. Railway station and airport are a little far  away.

By Road

Banda is connected through roadways to all nearby districts of Kanpur, Chitrakut, and Allahabad, Hamirpur, Fatehpur, Mahoba and other neighbouring districts of Madhya Pradesh. The capital city of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow is 219km away from Banda by road. There are state government owned buses and private buses which ply regularly between Banda and Lucknow.

By Train

Banda can be reached by rail also. The nearest railway station is Jhansi-Manikpur

By Air

The nearest airport is Varanasi.
