Moti Jheel

Moti Jheel (moti meaning pearl and jheel meaning lake) is a lake in Kanpur. It is also a drinking water reservoir and has adjoining gardens and children parks making it a well known tourist spot in the city. It was built during the British Rule and this along with Moti Park and Kamala Retreat, becomes one of the most recreational spots in the industrial city of Kanpur.

Location

Moti Jheel is located in the Benjhabar area in the city of Kanpur. It is situated near the Kanpur medical college in Ashok Nagar and lies adjacent to the Tulsi Upavan and Japani Garden.

Climate

The climate in Kanpur is typical to humid subtropical climate and experience very hot summers and very cold winters. Its climate resembles the climate of Delhi to some extent and is one of the very few places in the northern plains that experience such extreme temperatures. Unlike other places with humid subtropical climate, Kanpur experiences very hot and long summers and mild and short winters. There is also a monsoon season. During the summers, the temperature can go upto 48o C and during the winters, the temperature can drop to even 0o C. January and December are the months when Kanpur experiences severe fog. Loo is common during the summer and the monsoon season starts from July and continues till September. The best time to visit this place is either during the October-November months or February-March months.

Geography

It is a rectangular lake that was built many years ago. It is a very well maintained spot in Kanpur and is surrounded by a children’s park and landscaped garden.

Attractions

The park and garden surrounding the Jheel is itself beautiful and you will have a nice time strolling around the jheel. The Tulsi Upavan and the Japani Garden are also nearby. Some of the other nearby attractions includes Massacre Ghat, Green Park Stadium, Sri Radhakrishna Temple, Musanagar and a few more.

How to Reach

Kanpur is an industrialized city and the entire city is well connected from one corner to the other. There are state-run buses and private buses, taxis, auto-rickshaws and rickshaws for traveling inside the city. Kanpur as a city is also well connected to other cities of the country.

By Road

Kanpur has a wide network of roads and two important roads that pass through this city are National Highway 2 and National Highway 25. The first one connects Delhi and Agra via Allahabad to Kolkata and the second one connects the city with Jhansi, Shivpuri and Lucknow. The UPSRTC runs an efficient bus service to Kanpur from other cities of the state. Once you reach Kanpur, you can hire a taxi or auto-rickshaw to reach Moti Jheel.

By Railways

Kanpur is a very well connected city and the Indian Railways connect it to all the nook and corners of the country. There are both express and passenger trains to Kanpur.

By Air

The nearest airport is the Chakeri airport and the Amausi airport in Lucknow is 65 km way from the city. Both these airports are connected to few of the cities of the country. Once in the airport, you will have ample options for reaching Moti Jheel.
