Chittaura Jheel

The Chittaura Jheel is located in the Bahraich District near the village Chittaur in Uttar Pradesh. Teri Nadi, a small river originates from this lake which is the home to many migratory birds. Being a Hindu pilgrimage site, many fairs are held near this lake during Kartik Purnima and Vasant Panchami.

There is an ashram where Muni Ashtwarka used to live and this site also witnessed the epic fight between Ghazi Saiyyad Salar Masud and Raja Sukhdeo in the year 1033. There is temple complex with the statue of Raja Sukhdeo and temple dedicated to Goddess Durga situated here.

Location

The exact location of the Chittaura Jheel is 8 km from the Gonda-Bahraich Road. Located in the Bahraich district, this lake is a famous tourist attraction. Bahraich shares its international border with Nepal and is well connected to rest of the districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Climate

The climate of this lake is typical subtropical climate with warm and humid summers and cool, dry winters. The summers last from April and until June while the winters last from December and until February.  Mid of June to mid of September is the rainy season with the rainfall coming from the southwest monsoon winds. The highest temperature during the summer months is between 40o C to 45o C and the average is in the high of 30s. The maximum temperature during the winters is 25o C and the minimum is around 3o C.

Geography

The Chittaura Lake is a haven for many rare migratory species of birds and late monsoon is the best season to enjoy some bird watching here. Visit during August-October to watch these birds. There is a big wildlife reserve near this lake in Bahraich and is a must visit in Uttar Pradesh.

Attractions

Apart from the migratory birds, the Muni Ashtwarka ashram is a famous attraction here. The battle site of Ghazi Saiyyad Salar Masud and Raja Sukhdeo is also here. There is also a temple with the statue of Sukhdeo inside the complex. There are different other tourist places near to this jheel in the district of Bahraich like temples of Junglee Nath, Dargah Sarief, Kailashpuri Barrage and many more.

How to Reach

By Road

Bahraich is well connected by its network of roads and once you are in Bahraich, you will get all sorts of transport to Chittaura Jheel. National Highway 28 C runs through this district and UPSRTC buses connect Bahraich to various other cities in UP like Lucknow, Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur, Delhi, Bareilly, Agra and Haridwar. There are buses from Lucknow every 15 minutes. There are auto-rickshaws to take you to the Jheel.

By Railways

There is only one express train running between Kasganj to Gonda and several local trains running between Bareilly and Gonda that serves Bahraich. Jarwal Road lying on Delhi-Barauni like is 65 km away from district headquarters. 

By Air

The nearest airport is the Nepalgunj airport in Nepal and that is 66 km from the center of the district. The nearest Indian airport is Amausi Airport, Lucknow that is about 115 km from here.
