Shahi Qila Jaunpur

The Shahi Qila was built in 1360 by Firoz Shah Tughlaq. This fort is nestled close to the banks of Gomti River. This palace is made from the raw materials that were brought from the palace of the Rathore kings who reigned in Kanauj. The Sharqis strengthened the fortifications. This fort was reduced to rubbles until it was revived by emperors Humayun and Akbar. Later it was damaged during the 1857 first independent war and lastly acquired by the British.

History

In Jaunpur, this is among the most popular tourist attractions. The mosque reflects clearly the influence of the period when it was made. A quadrangle kind of structure is formed by the fortification wall with that of the main gate to the eastern part of the fort. This fort boasts of the unique structure named the BhoolBhulaiya which eventually, turns out to be a replica of the perfect Turkish bath, also known as the Hammam. This unique underground structure has arrangements for hot water, cold water and other needs. The mosque built in the court, depicts strong Bengal influences.

Layout

The exit, shaped as a Sally Port to the west end displays passages that are steep and are cut through the mound. The primary gate is almost 14 metres high and in its depth it is almost 5 metres. The factor of chambers on either side is a common attribute. A courtyard was added in the reign of Akbar. This courtyard was introduced opposite the east gate. Additionally, another gate with 11 metres high entrance was added. The mosque within, featuring the Bengal styled architecture, is a 39.40 * 6.65 metres narrow structure. A long Persian inscription is recorded on a 12 m high pillar like structure. This development was administered by Ibrahim Naib Barbak in 1376.

The first citadel got its shape in-between 1376 - 77, depicting the Tughlaqid architecture in its active form.
