Kuchesar Fort

Kuchesar in the Bulandshar district of UP is located 80 km from Delhi and during the British Raj, this district was an important zamindari seat. The exclusive Kuchesar Fort or the mud fort of Kuchesar was built by the Jat rulers of Kuchesar during the mid of 18th century. This fort resonates the story of the Jats who stood against the Sikhs, Marathas, Rohillas, Rajputs, French adventurers and the East India Company to create their entity and maintain their ground. The Kuchesar Fort is also known as the Rao Raj Vilas. This 18th entury monument is now a heritage hotel encased by 100 acres of mango grove. This fort is located in the village of Kuchesar, just two hours’ drive from Delhi. The fort is restored presently by the Neemrana Hotels to resurface as a prestigious heritage hotel.

History

The Jats in 1740 emerged as a strong military power in India. The Kuchesar Fort was captured in 1763 and revived in 1782. Since, then the fort has remained with the Jats. Lease was granted by the Mughals as well as the British Raj. This fort was constructed on 7 turrets to create a strong defence against the cannons of the British. The Kuchesar Fort entered Ajit Singh's family in the 18th entury when the Jat family got recognized as the Rao Bahadur after receiving the jagir of Kuchesar comprising of 365 villages. New structures have been introduced constantly to reflect different architectural influences. The section that has transcended into a hotel features mostly Mughal architecture.

Layout

The rooms are constructed around a square courtyard and feature balconies with unique arches and the lattice edges revealing the Mughal influences clearly. The portion of the fort that is converted into a boutique hotel by the Neemrana Hotels features rooms with original vintage furnishings and artifacts.
