Construction

It is on Sharda River that the lower Sharda barrage is erected which is nearly 163.5km downstream of the upper Sharda barrage. Being a part of Sharda Sahayak Pariyojana (SSP), Sharda barrage mainly relies on water deviated from Karnali (Ghaghra) at Girjapur by means of Sharda Sahayak link canal. The length of the canal is about 28.4km which receives water during the lean season for about eight months. But Sharda supplies when Karnali carries more of silt during the monsoon season of July and October.

Economy

The main intention of SSP is to irrigate culturable command area (CCA) of about 16,770 km2. The intensity of irrigation is about 70 per cent. The feeder channel of SSP is about 258.80km which initiates from the right bank of Sharda Barrage with a discharge capacity of about 650 m3/s. The various Sharda canal branches are the Barabanki branch, Daryabad branch, Haidergarh branch, Purva branch, while Rae Bareli branch obtains the supplies from Sharda barrage.

The beneficial fact of SSP is that it provides canal irrigation for cultivation area of 2 m ha; it also benefits lakhs of farmers in 150 development blocks and 16 districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
