Sathanur Dam and reservoir is one of the major dams and reservoirs constructed across the Pennaiyar River in the Chengam region near the Chennakesava hills in Tamil Nadu. The river Pennaiyar originates from the Chennakesava hills.

History

This dam and its reservoir were constructed in 1958.

Hydrology

Sathanur reservoir has a capacity of 207,300,000 cubic mts with a full level of 36 m. An area of 17,750 acres of vast land has been benefitted by the left bank canal and a vast land of 250 acres has been benefitted by the right bank canal of this dam and reservoir in Tiruvannamalai and Thandarampet blocks.
It irrigates about 8000 hectares of land.

Tourism

Near to Sathanur Dam, there is a fish grotto and a large crocodile farm. There are various parks which are maintained in the dam premises for the tourists. These parks make an ideal destination for excursions and picnics.

Several parks of this dam have been used as film locations by many filmmakers as these parks present stunning views and beautiful landscapes.

Sathanur reservoir can be reached by road by driving about 30 Km from Tiruvannamalai.

By Air

The nearest airport to Tiruvannamalai is Chennai located at a distance of about 185 Km. Regular buses and taxis are available from Chennai to reach Sathanur reservoir and dam via Tiruvannamalai.

By Rail

The nearest rail head to Sathanur reservoir is Tiruvannamalai which is located on the rail route between Villupuram and Katpadi. This rail route is quite active and is connected with rest of the country through a well developed network.

By Road

Reaching Tiruvannamalai by road is very easy as there are regular bus services from all the nearby cities including Chennai, Madurai, Salem, Tirupathi and many other cities and towns of Tamil Nadu.
