Kelavarapalli Dam is built over Ponniar River.  Ponniar River has its origin from the slopes of Chennakesava Hills which is located in the North West direction of Nandi Durg. The river flows in the south direction for a distance of approximately 90 km and reaches Kelavarapalli dam.

Ponniar River finally flows through the four districts after crossing the dam to merge into the sea at Cuddalore after travelling a distance of 330 km.

Canals are built on both right and left side of the dam to cater for irrigation of the nearby village. The right canal runs till Thorapalli Village covering a distance of 22 km and the left canal travels a distance of 25 km till Soolagiri Village.  

History

Kelavarapalli Dam has been constructed on the River Ponniar. This dam has the capacity to store 480 m3 Ft. The dam irrigates the agricultural lands of Krishnagiri, Vellore, Cuddalore and Dharampuri districts. It is located at a distance of 10 km from Hosur. Kelavarapalli dam is a place worth visiting for the natural beauty and pollution free environment. City dwellers can enjoy the typical village culture by visiting the nearby Chennathur village. Bird watchers can enjoy the site of various migratory birds in the vicinity.

Hydrography

Kelavarapalli Dam caters for medium Irrigation. The construction of the dam commenced in 1977 and completed in 1993. The main districts which are benefited include Krishnagiri and Dharampuri.

The best season to visit Kelavarapalli Dam and Hosur town is during the period between October to March after the monsoon period. Summer months are very hot and are advised to be avoided. Heavy rainfall during the monsoon period makes visiting this place very difficult. With the onset of mild winters, the area bears an excellent look and is considered ideal.

By Train

Hosur Railway station is well connected with trains from all major Indian cities. There are a number of trains operating from Bangalore, Coimbatore, Mysore and Mumbai. Kelavarapalli Dam is located at a distance of 8 km from railway station.

By Bus

Hosur bus stand started its operation in 2010. The Bus stand has excellent connectivity with other prominent cities of the state. Numerous private Volvo, Deluxe and government buses ply between important destinations from this bus stand.
