Kanyakumari Beach is one of the most popular and beautiful beaches in the South of India and attracts thousands of visitors from India and abroad every year. The sunset and sunrise at Kanyakumari beach are clearly the most decisive components of attraction that keeps bringing mesmerized visitors back to this beach.

Location

Kanyakumari Beach is located at the southernmost tip of the Indian peninsula amidst the majestic confluence of the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. It falls in the state of Tamil Nadu. The beach at this southernmost tip is formed by the meeting of eastern and western coasts here are unique in the sense that it has multi-colored soft sand. The place is also called Cape Comorin, a name that’s stuck since the times of British Rule.

History

The place is named Kanyakumari to honor the memory of Goddess Kumari Amman. There is a temple build on the seashore for the Goddess which is visited by tourists coming to Kanyakumari Beach. Kanyakumari district is also called as Kumari district, and largely consists of two parts known as “Nanjilnadu” and Idai Nadu ruled by Pandiya Mannan and Cheran Mannan respectively till the early 10th century. With the rise of the Hoysalas and Chalukyas, power changed hands and Venad Chief took control of the establishment.

About the Beach

The sea is quite rough here which makes the visit to Kanyakumari beach a highly exciting proposition that’s full of adventure. The long stretches of sand are uniquely multi-hued which makes it stand out from other beaches in the region. The main attraction for tourists, besides the many historical landmarks here, is the distinct and spectacular sunrise and sunset that looks reddish and appears to be unfolding right in front of your eyes. If you are here on a full moon evening, you can enjoy the rare sighting of sunset and moon rise happening simultaneously. Gathering seashells of various shapes and sizes is a must-do activity for tourists.

The Most Popular Place in Kanyakumari

One of the most important places of attraction in Kanyakumari is the Vivekananda Rock Memorial. It stands about 500 meters from the southern tip on a rock. It was built in honor of the Hindu spiritual leader Swami Vivekananda in 1970 by the Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee.

The point of confluence of the three major water bodies is called the Sangam and is a major point of attraction for visitors. It is a bathing ghat, with steps leading into the water. There is a lagoon-type formation created between lands by a series of rocks. Visitors love to bathe and have fun as they get rocked and bounced around by the slightly harsh waters.

How to Reach

By Bus

Tamil Nadu state transport corporation runs a ring route bus service for tourists that starts from Kanyakumari and takes the route that includes Vattakottai, Padmanabhapuram Palace, Pechipparai Dam, Muttom Beach and back. You can use your own transport by hiring local cabs and private cars.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is Kanyakumari railway station which is just one kilometer from the beach.

By Air

The nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram Airport which is 80 km from the beach.
