The bright and glowing moonlight, the mesmerizing lake side, what could the princess resist. Maharana Jagat Singh II used to enjoy moonlight picnics with the ladies of Zenana on this beautiful lake island. It was only till the time his father found out about it. It was after when his father closed this option for him, he decided to make his own and the construction began in 1743 which was named as Jag Niwas in Lake Pichola. It was inaugurated in 1743 after the name of the 62 successor of the Royal Mewars.

Apart from Taj Lake Palace, the city palace was also used as a place to stay during winters. What was made just to have fun, later turned out into the most lovable and romantic destinations of today. Also the famous bond film, Octopussy was shot in the hospital premises.

Architecture

The beauty of this palace cannot be explained and put in words. There are many courtyards with many fountains, terraces, beautifully done gardens and the picturesque striking beauty cannot be forgotten. Many rooms by names of Ajjan Niwas, Bada Mahal, Phool Mahal, Khush Mahal and Dhola Mahal are there in Lake Palace. These rooms are beautifully done with pink and green lotus leaves, glass work, striking paintings and carved arches.

One needs to take a boat to approach the Lake Palace in Udaipur. These boats are available from the banks of Lake Pichola.
