About Ambalavayal Heritage Museum

Heritage Museum in Wayanad is also referred to as Ambalavayal Heritage Museum. It is located about twelve kilometres south to Sulthan Bathery. This is situated in Wayanad District in the state of Kerala in India. The museum is taken care of by District Tourism Promotion Council. Unique artefacts and relics from the tribal area are displayed in this museum. There are four galleries in the museum displaying different artefacts. These are Verasmruthi, Devasmruthi, Jeevanasmruthi and Gothrasmruthi. Some of the artefacts date from Neolithic Age and some from the seventeenth century. The way tribals live and the grave stones on the memorials adorning hero’s graves and a wide array of figures made from terracotta are also on display.

Since it is an archaeological museum, it has a unique collection of exceptional artefacts. Some of them hail from second century. These artefacts are a proof of the fact that human civilization was present here that too in a planned manner. Some other curios that can be seen here are bows, clay models, arrows, stone weapons from prehistoric times, clay sculptures and many more.

Sections of the Museum

The museum has several sections for the artefacts. Some of the artefacts have been derived from excavations from Muniyaras. These are basically rock monuments hailing from Megalithic Age. Models of chambers where tribes used to be buried are also displayed. These chambers consist of 4 stones that are positioned on edges and another rock roofs them which is known as a cap stone.

Blocks of the Museum

Vestiges of prehistoric wars, hunting games, etc are displayed in Veerasmruthi Block that shows the life a primitive man used to live. 

In the next block, Gothrasmruthi block, several unique relics like bags in which fish used to be collected, cow bells, and many other things depicting the life style of Wayanad’s tribal communities can be seen.

In the third block, the Devasmruthi block, relics that belong to Neolithic Age are exhibited. About twenty idols are also displyed in this block that are made from stones and date back to the time between twelfth and sixteenth centuries.

In the final block, a wide spectrum of ear ornaments, hunting traps, necklaces and bangles that were used by tribals are displayed.

Edakkal Caves

Perched on Ambukuthi Mala, Edakkal Caves are located at an altitude of about one thousand meters high from sea level. The caves are believed to be the original or most basic settlements of humans on this Earth. Caves are atop a cliff perched precariously. The length of the cliff is 96ft and the width is 22 ft. A stone in the middle is the actual meaning of the word Edakkal. As per fable, the cave was formed due to the arrows shot by Lord Rama’s sons, Luv and Kush. Fred Fawcett discovered this cave who at that time was a SP in Malabar District in the year 1890. He concluded after lot of studies and research that this cave used to be occupied by Neolithic Man. Some of the most beautiful paintings in the cave were discovered. Kurumabars were believed to have been responsible for the handwork. They were one of the tribes living in this area.

Jain Temple

A prominent Jain Temple is situated on the Bangalore-Calicut Highway. Around thirteenth century, this temple was built. The temple was also used for storing ammunitions during the time of Tipu Sultan. Complex carvings on the stone add character to this temple. Erstwhile architectural style used in Kerala is used in this temple. To Ananthanatha Swami this temple has been dedicated who was a very popular saint in this region.

Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple

Located close to the bus stand close to Sultan-Bathery, the temple of Sree Maha Ganapathy is located in the Wayanad District. This temple of elephant God, Lord Ganesha also houses several other idols like Sri Ayyappa, Sri Nagar, Goddess Saraswati and Sri Sivan. A wide array of cultural programmes is held in the temple organised in the form of 8 day long festival on an annual basis. The programs that take place here are Ottanthullal, Chakyar Koothu and many more. On the 3rd and 4th day of the festival, a popular local art form by the name of Kalamezhuthu Pattu is also performed. On the festival’s last day, the Lord Ganesha’s idol is brought out and elephants led a big procession.

St. Thomas Orthodox Church

Close to Sultan Bathery, a famous Church, St. Thomas Orthodox Church is located. Earlier, Cochin’s Bishop used to manage this church but not it is managed by Sulthan Bathery Diocese. On any special occasion and in the mornings on Sunday, a Holy Qurbana is organized.

Phantom Rock

Close to Ambalavayal, Phantom Rock, a rock formation in the shape of skull is located about ten kilometres away. It is also referred to as the Cheengeri Mala. This place is popular among trekkers and campers as thick vegetation surrounds the area.
