Payyoli Beach

Payyoli Beach is located in Payyoli village in the north of the Malabar Coast of Kozhikode district in Kerala State of India. India’s renowned athlete, P.T Usha was born in Payyoli and was also coined as the Payyoli Express. The beach has silver sand and the shore is filled with palm grooves. Shallow sea water of the Payyoli beach, makes it ideal for performing the eclectic water sports and swimming activities. Vast stretches of the lands offers a magnificent sight and therefore, this place is famous among the tourists. Thikkodi light house which was build for the shipwreck is an additional sight. Payyoli is also shelter to the Nature Conservation Centre, ‘Theeram’, which was set up by the neighborhood fisher folk, to protect the endangered species of the Olive Ridley turtles. Visitors are sure to grab a sight of numerous turtles approaching the seashore to lay their eggs. Visitors are sure to see a number of the turtles coming to the seashore to lay their precious eggs in the month of November and December. To the north of Payyoli, at a distance of one and a half kilometer, is the River Moorad meant for bird watcher’s delight.

How to Reach

By Air

The Calicut International Airport is at a distance of 23 km from Kozhikode town. Tourist cab charges approximately Rs 400 to travel from the airport to the town.

By Rail

The Kozhikode’s railway station is well connected to all the major cities of the state. Transport facility is made easily available from the railhead to get to a particular destination.

By Road

There are several bus services operating from major cities like not only Kochi, Mangalore, and Thiruvananthapuram, but also Chennai, Bangalore, and Coimbatore to reach to Kozhikode. Kozhikode has cheaper and excellent services for buses. KSRTC buses frequently swing to the city from several areas of the state.

By Water

Boats from Kozhikode, Cochin, Mangalore and Changanacherry are available.

Weather

The district usually has a humid climate along with a tremendous hot climate taking over from the month of March to the May. The rains are experienced during the South West Monsoon, which starts in the commencement of June and continues up to the month of September. The North East Monsoon starts from the mid of the month of October and continues till November ends. The average mean rainfall measured is 3266 mm. The ideal weather is witnessed towards year end, i.e. in the month of December and January. During this period, the place is blessed with the clear skies, and the crisp air. The maximum temperature tracked was 39.4 °C in March 1975 while the minimum was 14 °C tracked on 26 December 1975.
