Cubbon Park is a great place to laze around in the lush green paradise. This beautiful park is the right place for those seeking pleasure and peace of mind and is a favorite of the walkers, joggers and nature lovers. Since its creation in 1870, the park has been elating people with its charm and simplicity. The credit of calling Bangalore the ‘Garden City’ goes to the Cubbon Park.

Location

This park is situated in the central administrative area of Bangalore, near Gandhi Nagar in Karnataka. Its location near the High Court makes Cubbon Park easily accessible. The park is spread over an area of 300 acres.

History

Initially, the park was called Meade's Park after Bangalore's in-charge commissioner Colonel Meade. Later, it was named after Major General Sir Mark Cubbon, who had served Bangalore for the longest period. The park is also known as Sri Jayachamarajendra Park.

The vast landscape of the Park was first visualized by Major General Richard Sankey, the Chief Engineer of Mysore State. In 1870, it was made reality by Sri John Meade, the then Commissioner of Mysore. Gradually, it was improved by the addition of new structures and features. In 1927, the park finally called Sri Chamarajendra Park to honor the 25 years of rule of Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar.

Salient Features of the Park

Flora and Fauna

The park has a rich collection of flora and fauna. There are more than 6000 plants in the park along with a variety of trees like the Ashoka, Pine, Tamarind, Gulmohar, Bamboo and Mango. A rose garden lies exactly opposite the public library entrance. It has a wide variety of roses with enticing colors attracting the attention of the passersby.

Many birds can be seen in this park, including Robin, Cuckoo, Kingfisher, Bee-eater, Bulbul, spotted owl and the Indian pond heron.

Bandstand

It is in an octagonal shape made with cast-iron and was built in the beginning of 20th century. It is here that the British Royal Air Force used to play western band music.

Aquarium in Cubbon Park

The aquarium housed in an octagonal building is a fresh water aquarium, exhibiting a variety of fishes, indigenous as well as exotic. The Hocks stick, Pearl Coushmi, India Tiger Borb, Moon Tail etc. are found in its water. There is also a fish stall here.

Cubbon Park Aquarium Timings: Cubbon Park Aquarium is open from 10 am to 5 pm on all days except Thursdays and on general holidays.

Cubbon Park Hosts 5 Magnificent Statues

A statue of Queen Victoria statue was installed in 1906 in one corner of the park near the Mahatma Gandhi Circle. Queen Victoria was the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and also used the title of Empress of India.

King Edward VII statue was installed in 1919 at the north-western point of Queen’s park. Edward VII was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions.

Statue of Major General Sir Mark Cubbon has been installed near the terrace garden. Lieutenant-General Sir Mark Cubbon was a British army officer with the East India Company who became the British Commissioner of Mysore state.

Chamarajendra Wodeyar was the great Maharaja of Mysore whose statue was installed in 1927 in the centre of the park close to a tennis pavilion.

Sheshadri Iyer Memorial

In the middle of the park, there is a red painted Neo-Classical building known as the Sheshadri Iyer Memorial which houses a Public Library.

Attara Kacheri or the Karnataka High Court

This two storied building is inspired from Gothic style of architecture. It is a red colored structure built in stones. The literal meaning of Attara Kacheri is 18 court houses.

The Government Museum

The State Archeological Museum here is one of the oldest in India is also located within Cubbon Park. It was built by Colonel Sankey in 1876.

Venkatappa Art Gallery

This gallery hosts more than 600 paintings.

Jawahar Bal Bhawan

There is a also Bal Bhawan which is an amusement park for children. A train called Puttani Express runs 1.2 km within the park for the children. Elders are not allowed into this section until accompanied by their children.

  • There is a Doll Museum located in the periphery of this park.
  • A 20 million year old fossil tree is another thing that attracts tourists to this place.
  • Bangalore's first fountain was also built inside this park, which was presented by the Queen of Nepal.
  • Cubbon Park houses a number of other institutions of significance like the Cheshire Dyer Memorial Hall, Ottawa Chatter, Century Club and the Press Club.
  • The park also has a small lake and it is home for various varieties of ducks. There is also a separate area in the park for birds.
  • The place makes a great studio for photography enthusiasts.

Cubbon Park is open to the public at all times, but is closed to traffic from 5 am to 8 am every day.

By Rail

The nearest railway station is Bangalore city junction train station which is 2 km from Cubbon Park.

By Road

Cubbon Park can be accessed through MG Road and Kasturba Road. The common modes of transport in the city are metered auto-rickshaws and tourist taxis. KSTDC maintains a fleet of cars for hire.
