Regional Museum Of Natural History Mysore

While history and heritage are keys to understand human life and evolution, environment is the foundation that nurtures the very life of man. It is thus important that ecology is respected and preserved. The Regional Museum of Natural History Mysore is one such attempt to understand ecology, promote awareness about its importance and help all, particularly children, to know the significance of environment conservation.

History

The National Museum of Natural History was a part of the plans implemented in 1972 with a view to showcase the rich diversity of Indian flora, fauna and its vast mineral wealth to the world and also to provide children a platform to learn more about this richness so that they become environmentally aware. It was set up in New Delhi and initially operated from a rented building and was opened on a World Environment Day, 5th June 1978.

It was felt that such a museum depicting the importance and richness of environment should not be just in one place but that there should be more such museums all over the country. Thus regional branches of the National Museum of Natural History came into being, one of which was set up in Mysore in 1995. Other museums are in Bhopal and Bhubaneswar, capitals of Madhya Pradesh and Odisha respectively.

The Regional Museum of Natural History Mysore aims to not only portray ecological and mineral wealth but also aim to create awareness about the conservation of environment. Also, provide a facility to students to learn more about biology and geology so as to bring them closer to nature and to make them sensitive and responsible towards environment.

Galleries

There is an exhibit gallery that showcases biological diversity and evolution of environment through ages.

The gallery on biological diversity has a thorough feature on nature, from concepts of natural history to endangered species in flora and fauna and even focuses on many aspects of geology and diversity in animals and plants. There is also a separate section on tropical rain forests. An interesting aspect of this display is that it also has a section on the adaptations used by plants and animals to survive in different conditions and atmosphere.

Other sections in the gallery include one on mangroves and another section on sea comprising of marine habitat, blue whale, Cauvery River and more.

Another amazing section is an exhibit panel that focuses on deforestation and the damage to environment. There is a walk-through tunnel that takes visitors through the evolution of earth from its beginning to the modern times.

The Discovery Centre

This centre is specially made for students where they can study about plants and animals. Children can learn more about biology and geology through fun activities and toys. There is a bioscience lab, a mini theatre and more.

A computer room provides children an opportunity to learn about nature and biological diversity though multimedia programmes on the computer.
