Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery

Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery is located in the Jaganmohan Palace and has a remarkable collection of artefacts, paintings and other memorabilia belonging to the Mysore royal family. This art gallery is a rich symbol of the royal heritage of Mysore and a glimpse into the rich era of India.

History

Jaganmohan Palace is a symbol of the marvellous bygone era and the architecture and splendour of the palace is intact even today. It has a huge and varied collection of different art objects such as paintings and other artefacts. It was in 1875, that the magnificent three storied palace was converted into an art gallery so that everyone could have a glimpse into these amazing works of art and thus feel Mysore’s rich cultural heritage.

Galleries

The art collection is spread on all three floors of the Jaganmohan Palace.

  • Ground floor gallery: The ground floor of the art gallery is dedicated to paintings and murals that portray the family tree and genealogy of Mysore royal kingdom.
  • The first floor gallery: Here is a collection of renowned paintings of famous artists from all over the world. Some of the famous paintings of renowned artist Raja Ravi Verma can be found here.
  • The second floor gallery: A wide collection of musical instruments owned by Mysore kings are on display here.
  • The third floor gallery:  A vast collection of paintings owned by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III can be found here on the walls. The star attraction of this gallery is the vivid portrayal of the Dassera celebrations of earlier times.

There are also depictions of various games, the Indian chess game in particular. It is said that Krishnaraja Wodeyar III was an expert of many games and that he had also invented many new games. You can see all of them here.

Other Attractions

Some rare paintings such as Gravure prints, traditional gold leaf paintings and works of eminent artists from all over the world can be found here.

Timings and Tickets

The art gallery is open on all days from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm

For adults, Rs. 20 and for children – Rs. 10
