The J&K Government established a body to help with tourism concerns in the form of their fully owned company on 13-2-1970. The main objectives of this Corporation were to oversee hotels and other tourist locations in order to promote the appeal of the state. They also provided tourists with excellent travel amenities. The Corporation’s accommodation has a capacity of 2200 beds per day and runs 37 restaurants and cafeterias across the state. The transport requirements of all tourists are also taken care of.

The state is situated at the very north part of India Jammu and Kashmir is famous for its beauty while Kashmir is known as a region where paradise is regained.

The Department of Tourism in Jammu & Kashmir is the main developmental, promotional and regulatory arm of the state Government and its main role include:

  • Planning and overall execution of schemes for the development and improvement of the tourism infrastructure in various parts of the State.
  • Incentive as a form of support to the private sector industry for setting up various tourist facilities and also for promoting and marketing of their products and services.
  • Promotion and marketing of different tourist destinations and products of the State.
  • Regulation of the travel-trade through enforcing provisions under J&K Registration of Tourist Trade Act.

Tourist Offices of The Department of Tourism exist in all tourist resorts of the State. Furthermore, there exist 6 offices that deal primarily with tourists and are located in Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Kolkata. The Department also has the Engineering Division under its control for the implementation and execution of various schemes. A Planning Wing exists for formulating and monitoring of the plan schemes and overall marketing and promotion is done by the department’s Publicity Wing.

The ‘Jammu and Kashmir Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 1978/1982’ legislation was enforced with the aim of safeguarding the interests of tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir. Under this act, all the Tourist Officers posted in different resorts are vested with special powers as Prescribed Authorities to register and regulate the tourist trade in their respective areas of jurisdiction. Complaints and also to investigate complaints from tourists visiting J&K, the Department has an Enforcement Wing headed by a Superintendent of Police on deputation from the Police Department who is designated as Deputy Director Tourism (Enforcement). In cases where the complainant is seeking prosecution, complaint is needed in written format and can be used as evidence even after the tourist giving the evidence has possibly left the State.

Commercial activities are taken care of by the State’s Tourism Development Corporation. J&K Gondola Cable Car Corporation operates a Gondola Chair Car at Gulmarg, and an International Conference Centre exists near the Royal Springs Golf Course at Srinagar.
