Dachigam National Park

The location of the Dachigam National park is at a distance of 22 kms from city of Srinagar in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The park is spread over an area of 141 square kilometers. The name of the park is dedicated to the ten villages that were moved to new location and hence Dachigam National Park is the name which means “Ten Villages’.
In the year 1981 this area was declared as the National Park which earlier was looked up by the Maharajas and later the government took the charge of protecting the park in the year 1910.

The park displays different variation on every visit.

History

During the earlier days of the period of Maharajas in Jammu and Kashmir the area where the National park stands today was place of hunting for the maharajas. The major issue for the national park was to have the supply of neat and clean drinking water supply. Later after India got its independence the park came under the jurisdiction of Forest Department and later in the year 1951 this place was named as a Wildlife sanctuary.

In the year 1981 almost 10 villages were shifted from the surroundings area that were to be later be part of the National Park. The national park was named as Dachigam since it means “Ten Villages” and this name was given in order to respect the villagers of the ten villages who agreed to relocate so that the area could be observed as the National Park.

Topography of Dachigam National Park

The National park is located on the hills of western range of Himalayas. The altitude range of the park varies from 550 feet to 14000 feet above the sea level. Since the variation is too much so the national park is divided into two levels of region the upper level and the lower level. The visitor can experience both the lowlands area with normal slopes and also the highland areas that have Rocky Mountains and crag. The beautification of this park is mesmerizing for the visitors coming to visit the Dachigam National Park.

Flora in Dachigam National Park

The flora of the Dachigam National Park has a variety of different fifty tree species spread all around in the park. These trees include Pinus Griffithil, juglans regia, betula utilis, populus spp. prunus armeniaca, quercus robur, aesculus indica, abies pindrow , morus alba, salix spp, corylus colurna, ulmus wallichiana, etc.. Along with the trees there are numerous shrubs and herbs can be seen in the entire rang eof the park. These herbs and shrubs are berberis spp, parrotiopsis jacquemontiana, desmodium tiliaefolium, indigofera heterantha etc.

Fauna

The rich fauna of the park includes the various colorful bird species like Crimson Tragopan, glittering iridescent Monal Pheasant, Koklass Pheasant and Blood Pheasant. The other birds that are seen flocking in the skies of National Park are the golden eagle and the Lammergeier or bearded Vulture. There are total of 150 numbers of different species of birds flock in the boundaries of the national park.

Prime Attraction

The few of the major and uncommonly species seen in the national park are the Hangul who wander in the silver birch and conifers. The Dachigam national park in today’s time houses the Hangul’s that are on the verge of extinction. There looks are such that they have white rump patches and the antlers spread all over that make them very similar to the red Deer that are found in Europe.

By Air

The closest airport to reach Dachigam National Park is in Badgam district that is at a distance of 22 kms.

By Rail

The closest rail line to visit the Dachigam National Park is in Jammu that is at a distance of 315 kms from the National Park.

By Road

The state of Jammu and Kashmir where the Dachigam National Park is located is nicely connected to the well networked roads of the nearby states.

Where to Stay

Visitors can take accommodation in the rest house or also there are two lodges available. Visitors can also stay in the houseboats or the hotels that are in Srinagar.

Best Time to Visit

The most favorable period to visit Dachigam National Park is in the months from April till August.

Safaris

The lower region of the park have normal terrains that can be covered even by the older people but as one goes on the higher region of the park the terrain gets little tough for moving. There are various check points set up by the BSF all along the trekking path of the park. The movement in the park should be done in groups as there are chances of facing the leopards and bears, so a local person who is much familiar with the park should be taken while roaming in the park.

Visitor Information

  • Heavy woolen clothing’s are required while moving in the upper area on the park since the temperature is too cold as one goes high.
  • There are no charges to visit the park
  • Visiting hours of the park are from 5:30 AM to 6:30 PM.
  • Special permission is required to visit the park. The permission is given by the chief wildlife warden.
  • Visitors should hire a local guide while roaming in the park. Visitors should move in groups rather than moving alone.
