Katori Sar

Rajouri has a municipal council and a town in Jammu and Kashmir and is an important station will going to Poonch. Rajouri is at a distance of 130 km from Jammu city and lies on the Poonch highway. The district is also known as the Vale of lakes as many beautiful lakes are a part which adds to the beauty. Also, the Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University is in Rajouri. After the Kashmir conflict, there has been a remarkable decline in the number of tourist visiting the locality and it stands on an elevation of 915 meters which is considered to be average. Katori Sar is the smallest lake in Rajouri and is a bowl shaped lake which catches the glimpse of many visitors. This lake is not man-made and was naturally formed by the water of melting snow accumulating at one place. This lake amusingly dries by the end of September.

The Rajouri district is administered by Jammu and Kashmir where to its west lies the line of control, Poonch to its west, Naushera to its North and South has Chhamb. The lake in their local language is called as ‘Sar’ and ‘Marg’ is the meadows.

Rajouri district was earlier known as Rajapura In the historical times. As per Yuan Chawang, the Chinese traveler, Abhisara, Rajouri and Poonch was under the influence of Republican Kambojas during the ancient days.

Sports like Hand Gliding, Para Gliding and other adventure sports activities are very famous at this place. Best time to visit this paradise is from March to October. The extreme low temperatures in winters can be a deterrent for those who wish to explore the district.

How to Reach

One can reach this location with the help of government run buses and taxis and is at a distance of 160 km from Srinagar city. The closest airport is in Jammu and is one of the most viable options to reach. The airport in Srinagar has a good connectivity with the other place with public transport available easily. Also flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Leh and Jammu are very regular. One can hire a taxi from the airport as per the cost set by the government. The route to Rajouri is only via road so taking a flight till Srinagar or Jammu is a viable option. With Rajouri being 144 km from Jammu and 174 km from Srinagar, regular bus and taxi services make it easy for the tourist to go till Rajouri.

The closest railway line is in Jammu which is at a distance of around 144 km from the city.

The languages mainly spoken are Sindhi, English and Urdu and the currency used is Rupees. The best things to buy from Rajouri are to barge on the handicraft and the woolen items that are sold of different varieties.
