Shanti Vana is the memorial of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru. It is called Forest of Peace. It lies in proximity to Raj Ghat. Dignitaries come here to plant trees. The place is the perfect place for nature lovers, patriots, students, and seekers of tranquility.

The site offers a lovely environment to relax in peace. It is a place where visitors can spend some time away from the hustle bustle of Delhi life.

History

Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru belonged to an affluent and influential family that had a close bond with the Indian National Congress. His father Motilal Nehru was a noted Congressman and barrister. Nehru spent his childhood in the company of dignitaries who visited his father often. After becoming a qualified barrister, he joined Congress as its President. He regarded Mahatma Gandhi as his mentor.

Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India, serving the term from 1947 to 1964. He passed away in 1964 due to  stroke.

Architecture

Shanti Vana is true to its name. The place features sprawled natural beauty in the form of gardens, lush greenery, various saplings and trees, and beautiful plant stands. Visitors can find endless greenery in the Vana. The place offers an excellent spot to meditate and soak the senses in the purity of Nature.

Annual Event

Annual prayer sessions are held on Nehru’s birth anniversary, which falls on November 14. The day is celebrated as Children’s Day, as Pundit Nehru loved children immensely.

Cultural programs are also held in Shanti Vana on this occasion.

Timings and Entry Fee

  • Timings: 5:00 am – 7:30 pm from April to September and 5:00 am – 7:00 pm from October to March. Open all days.
  • Entry Fee: Free

Visitors must remove their footwear while visiting the memorial as a mark of respect.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Delhi is October to March.

How to Reach

Delhi is well connected to the rest of India through airways, roadways, and railways. The nearest railway station is Old Delhi Railway Station.

Visitors can reach Shanti Vana by cab or local bus or metro train. The nearest metro station is Chandni Chowk Metro Station. Tourists can also get down at Kashmiri Gate Metro Station.
