Kisan Ghat

A Mark Of Respect For The Farmers’ Leader

Kisan Ghat is the memorial of Chaudhary Charan Singh, a renowned farmer leader. “Kisan” means “farmer.” It is located just adjacent to Raj Ghat between the banks of Yamuna River and Mahatma Gandhi Road, also known as main Ring Road.

History

Chaudhary Charan Singh challenged the monopoly of Congress in Indian politics. His fight was focused on the benefit of the farmers of North India. This gave him a strong support base, which helped him to become an important figure in Indian politics.

Gradually, his efforts paid off and he even became a chief contender for the post of the Prime Minister during and after the Emergency. Chaudhary Charan Singh became the deputy Prime Minister first and then became the Prime of Minister of India in 1979.

Although he was unable to complete his term as the Prime Minister, he continued to shine as a notable leader in politics until his demise in 1987.

It is ironical, as most historians say, that the memorial of Chaudhary Charan Singh, who opposed the policies of Congress leaders, lies next to the memorial of the same leaders he opposed!

Architecture

Kisan Ghat has a simple design. This is probably to denote the humble origins of the farmer leader. The memorial structure is square in shape and built in marble on a raised platform. It features a glossy finish.

The memorial is covered with thick shrubs of different kinds from all sides. During the right season, blooms of various colors appear. There is an open space of about 19 acres around the memorial. Big, shady trees nearby keep the area cool and pleasant even during hot months.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Delhi is from October to March. It is possible to visit Kisan Ghat during summer months too thanks to the shade of trees near it.

How to Reach

Delhi is well connected to the main cities of India through railway, roadway, and airway. Tourists can hail cabs or auto rickshaws, or board metro trains or local buses to reach Kisan Ghat. The nearest metro station is Shastri Park Metro Station.
