Amar Jawan Jyoti – Remembering Our Heroes

Amar Jawan Jyoti or the Flame of the Immortal Warrior is a place every visitor to New Delhi has on his or her itinerary. It marks the tomb of the anonymous warrior and also symbolizes the great sacrifices that soldiers have made for our country in the past.

History

Amar Jawan Jyoti is a shrine which has an eternally burning flame. It is located under the arch of the iconic structure, India Gate which is perhaps the most popular landmark in New Delhi. Situated astride the famous Rajpath, the Jyoti or flame has been burning bright since 1971. Amar Jawan Jyoti was erected under the India Gate after India played a major role in the creation of Bangladesh in December 1971. The Jyoti commemorates the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives defending their country.

A Place That Signifies Selfless Dedication and Valor

Amar Jawan Jyoti is a black marble commemorative plaque in which a rifle is placed on its barrel and is crested by the helmet of the Unknown Soldier. The word Amar Jawan is inscribed in gold on every face of the cenotaph which is placed on a structure with four corners on which four torches burn eternally. Amar Jawan Jyoti was officially unveiled by the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi on Republic Day of India, January 26, 1972. Today, the place is visited by all visiting state guests to pay homage to the courage and dedication of soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Amar Jawan Jyoti is under surveillance all round the day by soldiers picked from all the three services of the country’s famed armed forces. The soldiers are honored on Vijay Diwas observed on 26th of January, every year. The Prime Minister, Chiefs of the various forces and other eminent dignitaries place floral wreaths at the Amar Jawan Jyoti on this day.

Information for Visitors

India Gate where Amar Jawan Jyoti is enshrined is open for visitors from 0600 Hrs to 1800 Hrs on all days. Entry is free.

How to Reach

Amar Jawan Jyoti is on Rajpath which is easily accessible from any part of New Delhi by private cabs or bus. The nearest metro station is the Central Secretariat. Indira Gandhi International Airport is just 15 km away.
