Talkatora Garden

Talkatora Garden is a Mughal styled garden located in Delhi. It is famous for its indoor stadium which hosts various sports events all around the year. The name of the stadium is Talkatora Stadium and there is a tank (tal) located at the western side of the garden. This tank is surrounded by parts of the Delhi ridge which forms a natural depression resembling a bowl or katora. This is what gives the name to the garden.

It is a beautiful garden and home to various species of flowering plants and it would take around an hour to explore this magnificent garden. It is located along the main Willingdon Crescent Road and happens to be a popular tourist destination. It is located very near to the Connaught Place and hence easily accessible from any part of the city. Shows on horticulture are also organized and is the perfect place for nature lovers.

This landscaped garden is also perfect for a leisurely evening walk and this is one reason why this garden is visited by many Delhites all around the year.

History

There is rich history associated with this particular garden in Delhi. As already mentioned above, this garden got its name from a tank that was present during the Mughal era. This tank or tal existed at the west side of the garden. However, the tank got filled up with time but there is an octagonal pavilion that exists even today. This domed shaped structure exists at the two northwestern ends of the garden and it was built to stop rainwater from flowing into the tank.

Another historical fact states that the area around this garden was used as the camping ground by the Maratha Army and this was the same place where the Marathas were beaten by Mughals in the battle of 1738.

However, this history does not matter to any of the visitors who visit this place. Most people know this place because of the stadium.

Best Time to Visit and Visiting Hours

This beautiful and well maintained garden is open all days. It is open from 3PM and until 6PM.  The best time to visit this place is during the spring as during this time, the garden becomes full of all lovely flowers and colorful shrubs.

This garden is also known as Talkatora Bagh and there is no entry fee for entering this garden. Its major attraction is the Talkatora stadium.

There are various other tourist spots nearby like India Gate, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Rashtrapati Bhawan, Bangla Sahib Gurudwara and the Jantar Mantar.

How to Reach?

By Delhi Metro

Rajiv Chowk and Patel Chowk are the nearest metro stations to this garden and the garden is only few minutes from these stations.

By DTC Bus

There are ample numbers of Delhi Transport Corporation buses those take you to this garden from different parts of the city. This is very well connected place as it is very near to the Connaught Place and loads of other tourist sites.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport is the nearest airport from this garden and it is located about 13 km from the garden.

Nearest Railway Station

New Delhi Railway station is the nearest one located only 5 km away. You can take taxis or private cars for rent from here to reach the garden
