Gallery Escape

The gallery embarked on its journey with the autobiographical works of the well-known artist of Modern India, the great M.F.Hussain. Soon it began showcasing the works of eminent artists who represented the 1980s with the likes of Jagdish Swaminathan, Krishen Khanna and many others. The gallery had an insight about nascent talents and provided a platform to many unfamiliar artists like Subodh Gupta, Ashim Purkayasta who have made it towards name and fame much later. It has showcased the works of artists of different generations and works done in varied mediums. The gallery hosted a two artist show last year called ‘The shape things will take’ with the works of Valsan Koorma Kolleri and Puneet Kaushik.  The most recent show hosted by the gallery was titled ‘Impotent rage’ which displayed the works of Akshay Raj Singh Rathore, an artist based in Paris. This work reflected the trepidation prevalent in rural India.

History

Gallery Espace was founded by its director Renu Modi in the year 1989 at New Friends Colony, New Delhi with the display of the autobiographical works by the famous and contemporary artist M.F.Hussain who is also an eminent member of the Progressive artists group. Renu Modi grew her interest in this genre when M.F.Hussain designed her abode in 1986. She began her career with a space which was actually of a board-room size and later as the business grew the modern three tier gallery was built which has been designed with state of the art technology. The director envisioned displaying the works of artists which captured the concerns of the society. The recent show held by the gallery called ‘Impotent Rage’ by Akshay raj Singh Rathore portrayed the stories of anguish and male dominance prevalent in the rural societies of India. It also exhibited the two artist show last year featuring two artists of different generations and styles called ‘The shape things will take’. This show canvassed the different styles of artists like Valsan Koorma Kolleri and Puneet Kaushik who weaved, painted and even sculpted to create a story which was a visual delight.
