Transportation In Chandigarh

The largest number of vehicles in India is found in Chandigarh as the wide roads and parking space availability allows people to have several cars without any issues. This eases the local transport as well.

The public transport buses are being operated by the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU). They have Inter State Bus Terminals (ISBT) in sector 17 as well as in sector 43. The bus services to travel to the neighbouring states of Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh are also there. The city has the National Highway 22 which connects it to Kalka, Ambala, Shimla and Kinnaur. Chandigarh also has National Highway which connects the city to Leh.

By Car

The connectivity via road is equally good and the drive from Delhi is just four to five hours in which the national highway 1 is the best. The city is more like a gateway to Himachal Pradesh.

Important Distances:

  • Shimla - 110 km (68 mi)
  • Manali- 320 km (200 mi)

The highway has a scenic beauty and most of the passengers travel vial Indica and other smaller vehicles in this route.

It was really convenient to take the cabs at the time of summers when you travel to Chandigarh, but it should be avoided in winters as there was a lot of fog at that time. The months between December and February are the ones which have the maximum fog. During the night and early morning, the fog increases a lot which is because of the hills surrounding the area. The visibility can reduce to as low as six feet at times.

The city does not have much taxi services and one can find the taxis only at the taxi stands which are there in the commercial market of the sectors.

Fully A/C cab services are also being started by the UT administration and by making a single call; one can receive the cab at their door step. You can also find cabs at the railway station and the airport. These cabs are really comfortable and serve the satellite towns of Mohali and Panchkula apart from Chandigarh. Chandigarh was the first Union Territory to have radio auto services which are pink in colour and charge Rs. 10 for the first kilometer and the subsequent kilometers are charged by Rs. 8. This service is named “Tuk-Tuk” which is available for the people round the clock.

In spite of them being available everywhere, they are not all that popular in the city. The auto drivers might not agree to charge you via meter, so you should negotiate on the terms and then hire an auto.

By Cycle Rickshaw

The three wheeled pedal rickshaws having a seat at the back so that the passengers can sit are the Cycle Rickshaws. The driver is in front and cycles it to go forward. They are best meant to travel short distances or the places which cannot be walked down as they are too long and too short to be travelled via auto or taxi. They can be found anywhere in the city and you need to negotiate really well before boarding it otherwise they might ask you for extra money.
