Visaka Utsav

As the name indicates, Visakha Utsav is a festival celebrated mainly to let the entire world know about Vishakhapatnam's rich and varied heritage. The city is one of the most developed state of Andhra Pradesh and occupies a predominant place in the maritime history of the state. The port of Vishakhapatnam is well maintained and attracts millions of tourists all through the year. Every year, during the month of January, this festival is celebrated from 3rd Friday till the 3rd Sunday. This festival is celebrated on all the three days with extreme pomp, splendour and fervour because this is the best platform available for the city to showcase its rich culture and history to thousands of tourists who visit during this time of the year.

During this time, the port city assumes a certain brightness and vibrant ambience that words cannot describe. Realising the importance of this festival, the Tourism Department of the state too undertake many strategies to market this festival well in the minds of the local and international tourists so as to attract maximum audience for this festival. This festival was started off during the year 1997 and there has been no looking back ever since. The tourism department goes to the extent of conducting road shows in all the major cities in the country like Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Bhubaneswar etc. about the importance of this festival so as to leave an indelible impression in the minds of the people about the importance and value of this festival.

During these road shows, the officials hire cultural troupes from Vishakhapatnam to perform at these big cities so that people can get an idea of the flavour of the city. The festival is full of fun and entertainment and is a perfect place for unwinding as a family because there is something in it for everyone. Innumerable stalls selling Vishakhapatnam's famous goods catch the fancy of local and international tourists who visit here. The venue for this festival is always Ramakrishna Beach, popularly known as RK beach. One is sure to lose track of the food stalls that are put up during this festival, as there are infinite stalls, selling lip-smacking local delicacies. These foods stalls are thronged by hundreds of tourists. The festival also sees stalls hosting some of the finest handicraft and traditional arts exhibitions, different types of flowers, cultural shows and programs depicting the culture and lifestyle of the city etc. There are sports events and fashion shows too for keeping the tourists engaged throughout the three days.

The tourism department has been doing a great job in ensuring that the Visakha Utsav is attended by as many tourists as possible, thereby increasing their revenue to a great extent. The tourism officials are in talks with some of the leading hotels and domestic airlines for requesting for a discount or reduction in their tariff rates and ticket prices during the Utsav every year, so that tourists get motivated to attend the festival in large numbers.
